Why does my parakeet sound like a pigeon?

Hi my parakeet has peen making like growling noises like a pigeon.

I know he is not mimicking them. He does it a few times a week. Please help is he hungry, or thirsty or is he trying to talk? Please help thank you. :-)

  1. We had parakeets when I was a kid.  I remember they made noises like that when they were content.  I thought of it as when humans hum.

    I wish you told us what he's doing while he's making this noise.

I don't know about parakeets, but cockatiels hiss and growl to express anger.  Cockatiels tending to their eggs will growl when someone approaches that they don't want there (someone that they're not familiar with).  Without actually being able to observe the situation in your home, I'd imagine that he's angry about something.
