Question:

Why does my phone make a clicking noise?

I have this problem. My cordless phone makes a weird clicking sound when I dial someone. Now, this is the second phone I buy and I tossed the old one because the clicking sound didn't let me dial extensions, for instance. I dial 7-digit phone number and it will take like a minute clicking before it finally makes the call (and it takes forever when I dial an 800 number). Now my new phone that I bought like two months ago is doing the same noise. Does anyone know why this happens? Is the phone broken? The phone I have is in good conditions and I don't want to throw it away! Please help! Thanks, in advance.

  1. There are 2 settings the phone can use to "contact" the exchange when you dial a number. The best and most modern is DTMF (Dual Tone Multi Function) which sends a series of "beeps" for each number you press on the phone. The other is Loop Disconnect calling which sends a series of "clicks" for each number you press. You can change this setting on desk phones by means of a button located on the side or underside of the phone. On modern cordless phones, you can change this by entering the menu and looking for something like " Dialling Method". Some phones have a code which you enter to change it, but you will need to read the manual to check this.

  2. it sounds like your phone line is being tapped.
