Why does my phone work even though it is not plugged into an electrical outlet?

It just does... Its a Sanrio Hello kitty phone... corded...

  1. phone jacks have that ability to power a phone. the cord that came with your phone was wired with the ability to be powered with the one wire. you phone was also made with that compatibility. other phone wires do not come with that unless the company makes the wire power compatible. i have a panasonic phone that does the same thing. i asked my brother-in-law your question because he specializes in electrical engineering. lol


  2. If it plugs into the 'phone socket' it will get it's power from there.

I assume that your telephone is an old fashioned non-electronic model.  The telephone company sends a DC voltage out on their lines to your house which provides all of the electrical energy needed  to operate your telephone instrument.  When you take the receiver "off hook" that completes the circuit back to the telephone company.  Your voice and that of the other party are carried  as a fluctuating analog current on these wires.

    If there is a power outage, the telephone company has independent power sources that will keep its equipment and your telephone operating - for a while at least.
