Question:

Why does my puffer fish's tail get stuck to his side?

I have three puffer fish, and two of them frequently get their tails stuck to their right side. When I stick my net in to see if I can help, they swim away, tail unstuck, as if nothing was the matter. Should I be worried or is this a natural act?

  1. It's probably natural, weird but natural, LOL. Mine sleeps with its tail on its side. I guess if they're not having a problem swimming like that they're probably fine.

  2. Many puffers will curl their tails towards their body for protection.  Since blowing up causes them stress they have adapted when there isn't a REAL threat to curl their tails.  Don't worry it is normal and natural.  If they are doing this often, you may want to check into it further.  Two of them could be males and the other a female.  Although this is a "less stressful" way of dealing with things, it may lead to more aggression.
