Why does my rabbit do this?

My little sister has a rabbit right? It's a nice rabbit, but I've noticed something that she never used to do. Her rabbit chews on her cage. It's weird, 'cause she'll have food and water in her cage, but she still chews on the bars. Why is she doing this? and how can I make her stop?

  1. Well you have to think of how much exercise she's getting, and for how long. Rabbits don't like to be in their cages at all, for the reason that there isn't a way out and they feel traphabitaty also have a natural habbit of chewing, that is to keep their teeth from getting to long, maybe try putting a few chew toys in her cage (be sure they are rabbit friendly).

Hope it helps make sure she isn't swallowing anything she shouldn't, like plastic and such.

Also a tip, some trees are poisonous to rabbits and kill them, they also have to be dried over a period of time. try to avoid food colored toys as they can stain the rabbits fur.

  2. Buy wood sticks or find some thick sticks in your yard for him to chew on bcuz a rabbits teeth NEVER stop growing.

  3. Do you feed the rabbit hay, remember rabbits teeth never stop growing so they have to have hay to chew on throughout the day, also wooden toys, or branch off a tree, this will keep her teeth down and also give her something to do as she might just be getting bored!

    Hope this helps

  4. Rabbits need (and like!) to chew. Make sure she has plenty of timothy hay available at all times. My rabbit spends hours a day just sitting and eating hay even though he has access to the whole upstairs of the house.

She may also be bored. She'll appreciate some other things to chew and rip up - my rabbits loves cardboard boxes. It gives them an outlet for their chewing and something to occupy their time. Take a fairly large cardboard box, cut two doorways in it, and soon the rabbit will be tearing it up, sleeping in it, jumping on it, and even making new "windows" and larger doors!

Here's a very extensive list of toys that might keep her occupied and prevent bar chewing:

Also, how big is the cage? If she's bored and in a relatively small cage, an upgrade will be a welcome change. Make sure she has room to hop several times in each direction and stand up fully without touching the top.

Is she spayed? Unspayed rabbits can be more prone to chewing and other "destructive" behaviors. All rabbits chew to some extent, but spaying can reduce the behavior.

  5. I have a rabbit that stays in a cage just inside the house next to the patio door.  It is an enclosed patio at my apartment so she can go out there and run around.  I also have a covered litter box out there for her.  It seems that she does that mainly when she wants out for a bit or just wants some attention.  I noticed that she mainly goes for the area near the handle on the door, like she is trying to open it.  Smart, huh...not a "dumb bunny" lol.  Does your rabbit have plenty of things to chew on?  I buy hamster/gerbil chew toys like a hollowed out half log thing.  Rabbits HAVE to chew to keep their teeth healthy.

  6. if its a small rabbit its stil growing its teeth and soo it needs to bit or chew on things

if its big than she wants to go to a different place   trying to come out

  7. Well it might want to come out (my rabbit is always chewing on the bars and as soon as you open the cage he runs out as fast as he can =P).

Also if you don't feed rabbits hay, they have nothing to wear their teeth down on, so she could be chewing on the bars if she has no hay to chew on.

Or like someone else said, who knows I guess she could just be bored!
