Question:

Why does my rat's ear stink?

My rat's left ear has stunk for about 6 months. Around December he started sneezing a lot so I took him to the vet and put him on antibiotics. He was on antibiotics for almost 2 months and it finally went away. After about a month the smell came back (March).

I finally took him to a different vet a couple weeks ago.

I was frustrated with her because she didn't know much about rats and didn't let me mention that I had been taking him to another vet before leaving the room. Anyway, she said if it was an ear infection that a weekly dose .1cc of Baytril a day would work. when before, the only thing that helped was when the previous vet eventually combined Enrofloaxin (baytril) with doxycycline.

I guess I should take him to another vet.

Does he have an ear infection?

It smells, so I assume that it's infected.

He doesn't have a head tilt but it smells kind of yeasty.

He seems fine, just scratches it a lot.

Should I put him on antibiotics?

Is there anything else that I can do?
