On my gary fisher 26" mountain bike i recently changed the gear cable but i did something wrong so when i try to change gears once i let go of the shifter it goes right back to 8th gear. it does not make the clicking sound anymore when i try to change it. i think it might be the shifter not clicking into place but can anyone help me on what to do to fix this problem?

  1. Yeah you should probably take it into the bike shop, typically they are friendly people ;)

Did you tighten the cable correctly?

  2. So, you took apart the shifter, eh? I guess that you now realize you shouldn't have done that!

You didn't mention what shifter you have but you have either lost a spring, or a ball bearing, or you have snapped off a pawl... all are common occurances when the repair is new to the, er, new mechanic.

All I can say is Bike Shop Time.
