Question:

Why does my son have tremors while nursing?

A few weeks ago my son started shaking while nursing mid-morning. I told the doctor about them, but she didn't seem too concerned. Since that appointment, I have been tracking them.

He has at least one tremor each day at 11 AM or so. They last anywhere from 5 seconds to 15 seconds. Every time, except for once, he had them while he was nursing and falling asleep. (Yesterday he had one when I pulled him out of him car seat at 4:45 PM, and he woke up.)

His eyes have been closed each time. When he has an episode, I lift his lids to check his eyes, and they are straight forward kinda like he's staring at something (my guess is that he's asleep, but truthfully, I don't know).

He is on solid foods. He has two meals a day. In the morning at 8:30 AM, he has cereal (barley) and a veggie and he has the same meal at 5:30 PM.

The tremors look like his arms shaking rapidly, and his head shakes a bit. When he has them I usually pull him off the breast and he "wakes" up and starts to cry.

He is 6 months old and weighs 19 lbs 6 ounces. I know, sounds like a chub, but he is also tall. I not sure of his height at the moment, but I can tell you he's wearing 12 month clothing comfortably.

I don't take any medications, except for a prenatal vitamin, which I was advised to take until I stopped nursing.

All other functions are working properly and his temp is alwasy normal when I check it. ( Knock on wood, he hasn't had any real viruses or infections yet...)

This sounds a lot like what others have posted, but I am worried about the frequency. Any opinions out there? Thanks for your help...

  1. I would talk to your doctor again. My nephew used to do something similar to this, and it ended up being a minor form of epilepsy, but it's really treatable.

  2. Call your doctor and discuss this with her again. Ask her to explain the reasons for the tremors. It will help if you know why it is happening and if you should be worried. Tell her what you have documented. If she does not give you answers you think are correct or refuses to spend the time to explain them to you seem another opinion from another doctor.
