Why does my son throw up when he's in the pool?

When we go swimming with my son that's almost 3 years old- he will throw up within 10 minutes. It doesn't matter if we go in the middle of the day, or later- I wondered if he gets motion sickness or what..??

If we stop swimming for a couple weeks, he doesn't throw up, but when we get back in the pool -bam- throw up. I really have no clue what's going on. He doesn't display any type of sickness until he's in the pool..

Anyone have this happen to your kid? thanks..

  1. Water up the nose.  Or drinking too much pool water.  I get sick really quickly if the water goes up my nose. It probably starts as a choke and goes to a full out blow out.  Try keeping his face out of the water.  My kids don't do this but I have a real problem with water in my nose and then getting sick.  Hope this helps.

  2. swallowing  chlorine

  3. I guess he's swallowing air or poolwater or both

  4. My daughter did this because she was drinking pool water or it would go up her nose.  Maybe swimming lessons so he's not taking in as much water but it'll be hard to find a pool that wants him!

  5. thats because of the heat. That happened to my nephew and he is 4 years old. Toddler under the age of 5 should be in the sun for more then an hour. They can get sick and have stomach flu. He will get sick now, monitor him really good. It is contagious. Because when my nephew got it, then his whole family got sick and when they came over my daughters caught it too and so did I. good luck

  6. i used to go swimming as a kid, and though i didnt throw up, i fetl VERY uncomfortable in there, i was scared of depths too, i used to sneak away EVERYDAY!

it could be a psychological thing for him, maybe its the water, chlorine, depth? anything! i think he's too young to understand clearly whats up with him. i'll suggest not take him in the water unless he himself wants to...!

  7. Anxiety probably. He may need someone to really support him in the water for a while until he feels comfortable.

  8. He may be swallowing too much water or gets motion sickness.. Try not to fill him up on foods then go to the pool

  9. I would def. mention it to your childs pediatrician.. It may just be the smells of the chlorine..even though its not strong to you, it may be strong to him. Also, it may just be the heat or change in temp. from inside the home to the pool water..or like you said the motion sickness.

But i would still call the doctor and see just to be sure!

  10. sounds like he is swallowing the pool water.  It is so chlorinated that it can cause nausea when swallowed.
