  1. Not all DVD players are made to the same standards or quality. DVD-R and DVD RW discs are physically slightly different, as are their index systems.

It costs the makers of the player a few pence extra to make it play different format discs (such as CD, DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD=RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM) so apparently the maker of yours decided not to spend the money.

Have a look at the box it came in (or the instruction book) to see what formats the machine is supposed to play. If it lists DVD+/-RW but doesn't play them then it's possible that it has a fault.

  2. Its obviously a DVD R player

  3. micheal g has it bang on, if you want to use that type of disk in a tandalone player, get a dvd recorder such as

  4. It's the way they are made (DVD-R's & DVD-RW's), They are made with different dyes and DVD-RW is a lot more difficult for a standalone dvd player to read from.
