it hurts to bite and eat spicy things. i woke up with it like that. and i was wearing a retainer

  1. Tongue discomfort can have many causes, from traumatic injury to bacterial or fungal infection to a nutritional or vitamin deficiency.

    Since I don't know your health problems (if any) or medications you might be taking, and since I can't see your tongue to tell if there are discolored patches, etc. on it, this is a very good article on causes of tongue discomfort:

    Without knowing anything else about your condition, since you're wearing a retainer, this may be related to a bacterial or fungal condition.  If you're not sure after reading the article, see your dentist or physician.
