Why does my upstairs neighbor vacuum so much?

What do you think he's vacuuming all the time?

He's probably mid to late 40's, lives alone, rarely has company, has no pets, and doesn't strike me as a clean freak when I see him around the apartments. He's not good looking but not o-my-god ugly either. Says "hi" to me just often enough to not seem too creepy by saying it too much or not enough.

Other clues: patio has a gas grill (newer): the old one looked really trashed and fire hazard-y! Patio cluttered with old, seemingly non-working bike, and a very weathered-til-gray wood shelving unit. Plus large plastic trash bags of something.

He vaccuums any time: I've heard him:

a) on weekend mornings

b) at 11:00 on weeknights

c) at 2:00 am

d) right this instant

It does seem to make sweeping sounds as if it's being pushed around the apartment and not just staying in one place (yeah, pervs, I already thought of THAT scenario).

  1. yeah, that's weird, he seems like an odd bird. i have a co-worker that vacuums her apt everyday...she also cleaned out her friend's fridge while she was on vacation, she was only supposed to be stopping by to feed the cat

  2. :))) We have the same problem :))) our upstairs neighbors vacuum all the time...about 3 to 5 times a day... but I don't have any idea why... and also they wash theirs clothing or whatever ( I don't know what) all day... and night.

But I don't know why they do that...I just want to let you know you are not the only one with strange neighbors. :)))

  3. He feels dirrrrrrty.

  4. I knew a guy who smoked and didn't use ashtrays.  He flicked his ashes all over the place.  His wife was constantly vacuuming up behind him.  Maybe this guy does the same thing but vacuums up after himself.

  5. He could have an obsessive compulsive disorder, or he is using drugs like meth.  People with ocd can not really control the need to do the same thing over and over.  If he is doing drugs, he is so wound up that he just needs something to do.  Most of the time, meth addicts are very clean because they never sleep and have way to much energy.

Whatever his reason is, you can politely ask him not to vacuum after 10 pm or whenever the noise curfew in your town is.  If that does not work, complain to your apartment manager.

  6. Maybe he vacuums as soon as he spills something regardless of what time it is.  Maybe it's food and he doesn't want bugs in his apartment or something.

  7. No doubt, he is unaware that his little OCD habit is being heard by you, since you are the apartment under him.  I will say this, its probably a bit of a fetish.  I have one too about the floors, I know its stupid, but I like to sweep, mop and vacuum daily.  If I SEE ANYTHING on the carpet, I whisk out one of 7 vacuum cleaners I have in the house (3 battery charged ones, 1 upright, one cannister, one shop vac and one dust buster).  Why?  I just can't stand to see anything on the carpets or floors.  If I do, I just grab one and go at it.  Takes 5-10 minutes and whoosh whoosh, I am done.  Sometimes, though, I realize the rest of the house is asleep and I MUST resist the urge to whip out one of the vacs and have a go at the offending dust bunnies or piece of paper.  Silly, yes, but its my silliness and OCD kicking in.  Other than that one, nothing else really fazes me!  Of course, I live in my own home and only have to worry about waking the kids, which I do consider, SOMETIMES, before actually proceeding.  Hope this helps you understand what is going on.  Good luck!

  8. He may have allergies or asthma and needs to make sure there is little or no dust.

Or maybe he has OCD..Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

  9. He's hiding something <_<

  10. I vacuum to get dirt or dust off my floors . I'll bet he does the same .
