Why does my vcr just stop playing and shut off?

Vcr will be playing (or recording) and all of a sudden it will just shut off. When I hit the power button it ejects tape. Tried different tapes, etc. Works fine for ff or rw.

just go get it fixed

My experience has been that when this happens, it is because the drive is slipping and the VCR can't maintain sync with the input signal. Generally, the cost of having the belts replaced is greater than the cost of a new VCR.
