Why does my voice always sound higher when I record it?

At first I though it was just me,

But I asked my brother to listen to me, and he agrees.

What's happening?

  1. This is very common when listening to  your own voice on a recording; when you hear yourself while you are talking, you don't hear your own voice the way others do.  This is mainly due to the sound taking two different paths to your ears; one through the air and the other through your body; it's the second path that makes it sound different.

In this case however you said your brother agreed that the recording sounded "higher" than your own voice; it's quite likely that whatever you are using to record your voice isn't doing a great job at reproducing sounds accurately at their true pitch. I suspect most cheaper electronics out there would fall into that category, which is why recording studios have equipment that costs so much.
