Just like my question asks, how come my wireless router loses connection when someone calls. If connect my laptop with the cable and someone calls I don't lose the connection. I have a NetGear wireless router and a gateway laptop if that matters. I am not very computer savy. If anyone can help me. Can you please list it step by step. Thank you in advance.

  1. The wireless router uses a special sort of frequency and occasionally some phones tend to have the same frequency. So when they call you, you may notice the collision. The collision of course is the between your routers frequency and the phone. I recommmend you change this in your routers setting.

    To log in to your router, you typically need to enter it's address. If you are on windows go to:

    1. start ->run

    2. cmd (click okay after typing "cmd" and a black and white screen should pop up)

    3. Then type ipconfig and click enter

    4. write the "Default gateway" number with periods into your internet explorer and click go and the information usually is as follows

    login: admin

    password: password.

    5. Browse the menu till you find the channel or frequency and change it to something so that it is 5.0Ghz or if it only support 2.4Ghz change the channel so that it is as far away as possible.

    If you need additional help feel free to post a little bit more information or feel free to browse the netgear website.

    If you use a mac use the ifconfig inside your "terminal". Then open safari paste that number with its decimals into the url bar , press enter , then enter your credentials. After that search for the channel and change it accordingly.

  2. Are you using a cordless phone, if you are then it might be causing interference with your wireless network, this is a common problem because some wireless phones use the same frequency, 2.4 Ghz as the wireless router, try using a corded phone or get a phone that uses the 5.8 Ghz frequencey

  3. Cordless phones and wireless routers both work on the 2.4 GHz frequency.  Along with baby monitors, the airspace can get crowded.  Try changing the channel your router is using.  There are 11 available, and switch to one that is as far away from the current setting as possible.

  4. Classic. My parents were having this for a while - You probably have a 2.4GHz cordless phone in your house. These randomly jump channels to improove clarity, security, and privacy but they aren't "friendly" with other wireless devices like networks and stomp all over the network, obliterating it's signal.  Your computer sees an interruption with the signal and then you're disconnected.

    The only sure-fire fix is getting a new phone that's not on the same 2.4GHz band.

    Put your wireless router as high up as you can and as far from electrical and metal things as you can, that'll give you the best coverage.  Try to put it in the middle of where you expect to be (usually the middle of the house).  If you have 2.4GHz cordless phones you may want to replace them with 5.8GHz, 900MHz, or the new DECT6.0 phones that won't cause interference.  Also, wireless video senders, or wireless cameras that run on 2.4GHz should be set to the farthest channel from your router (e.g. set video sender to 1 or A and put the router on channel 11).  Channels 1, 6, and 11 are preferable because they don't "overlap" with each other.

  5. Probably because your cordless phone is on the same channel as the wireless router.  You'll have to visit Netgear's website for the complete directions on changing your router's wireless channel.  It's not hard.
