At that distance in the high humidity short or no hair is good for a race strategy.  Think about the extra few pounds a full head of wet hair can be.  That would just be parasitic weight to haul around.  When a race you have trained for years to compete in can be won or lost in milliseconds, a few extra ounces can make a difference.
