Why does one group on FreeCycle say the owner doesn't exist?

When I check the status of my membership, it says my membership is pending. And when I emailed to find out what was taking so long, the response was that the group/owner does not exist.

  1. I'm an Imod for Freecycle, you can email me the group name and I'll try to find out something.  If the owner abandoned the group, etc.... then the Imod Team needs to know so we can enter and get the group going again.  I don't know how to give you an interim mod email address here for fear of solicitaion violation but I can help you figure it out.  The Imod Team needs to know.

  2. So you sent an email to GroupName-owner@yahoogroups.com (replacing GroupName with the actual Group name, of course), and that's how you found out the owner doesn't exist?  Then you should report a missing owner to info@freecycle.org ; tell them the GroupName you were applying to, and the problem you had.  Also, you might want to check and see if there is another FreeCycle Group near you, and if so, you can apply to join it.

BTW, sometimes an owner of a Yahoo Group disappears from the internet for various reasons, leaving the Group without an owner/moderator.  Unfortunately, this problem is slowly growing, as more and more Groups are entering this category.  FreeCycle Groups are no exception.

  3. Yahoo does not send replies stating 'group/owner does not exist'. if you sent the e-mail to the correct e-mail of the default owner address, and got a reply, then maybe it was from a moderator who doesn't have the privilege of approving members.

another possible answer is the glitch that went on last week when e-mailing the owner address or groups posting address.

you need to be more specific as to where that reply came from.

if in fact the owner is MIA, there are a zillion groups like this. consider locating another group.
