  1. The player you are talking about is a libero, they are a player who specializes in defense. The libero cannot play the front row and must rotate out if they reach the front row. I believe that the reason they wear a different colored jersey is so the other team knows who the libero is so that they can avoid aiming the ball for them since the libero is a defensive specialist and therefore if the ball comes towards them they will bump it up better then someone who does not specialize in it.

  2. They are the Labaro. They are used at the back and are only allowed on when the team is on defence.

This means that they must be substituted out when they're team is serving. This is a free substitution though.

Whilst on the court they are responsible to pass and keep the ball up and are not allowed by rule to spike or block up at the net.

  3. The reason is because they are the libero for the team which means they are the best passer on the team

  4. that would be the Labaro, its a french term, its a player that only goes on the court to take off the middle player in the back and goes off when that players position is rotated back to the front, the Labaro is used to keep the ball up when the other side is serving so that he/she can get it to the setter

  5. That player is called "Libero", who plays back row only, and can replace a back row player without costing a "sub".

When this player gets rotated to front row, s/he will be replaced by the one who was replaced, and the Libero can sit for one rally before coming back and "replace" another back row player.

They are in different color so that it is easier for refs and scorers to keep track of their on-and-off.

  6. It's the libero. they are like a defensive specialist. Their job is to only play the back row.

    It is a position.

    Here is information from wikipedia.

    "The Libero

In 1998 the libero player was introduced internationally, the term meaning free in Italian is pronounced LEE-beh-ro (rather than lih-BEAR-oh); the NCAA introduced the libero in 2002.[15] The libero is a player specialized in defensive skills: the libero must wear a contrasting jersey color from his or her teammates and cannot block or attack the ball when it is entirely above net height. When the ball is not in play, the libero can replace any back-row player, without prior notice to the officials. This replacement does not count against the substitution limit each team is allowed per set, although the libero may be replaced only by the player whom they replaced. The libero may function as a setter only under certain restrictions. If she/he makes an overhand set, she/he must be standing behind (and not stepping on) the 3-meter line; otherwise, the ball cannot be attacked above the net in front of the 3-meter line. An underhand pass is allowed from any part of the court.

The libero is, generally, the most skilled defensive player on the team. There is also a libero tracking sheet, where the referees or officiating team must keep track of who the libero subs in and out for. There may only be one libero per set (game), although there may be a different libero in the beginning of any new set (game).

Furthermore, a libero is not allowed to serve, according to international rules, with the exception of the NCAA women's volleyball games, where a 2004 rule change allows the libero to serve, but only in a specific rotation. That is, the libero can only serve for one person, not for all of the people for whom she goes in. That rule change was also applied to high school play soon after."

  7. i believe they are like the team captain

  8. It's a position called libero. The libero is a designated back-row player and generally the most skilled defensive player on the team. Not allowed to serve or block.

The color of the libero's uniform must contrast from the color of their teammates uniforms, and the shorts must be the same as their teammates.
