  1. This person is the libero. It is the defensive specialist. It is not a captain or the center of rotation.

The Libero is an Italian term pronounced LEE-beh-ro. (It is commonly mispronounced.) The job of the libero is to specialize in all defensive skills.  They are required to wear a contrasting jersey and cannot block or attack the ball when it is entirely above the net height.  At breaks in the game, when the ball is not in play, the libero may replace any back-row player without notifying the officials. The libero can then be replaced ONLY by the player whom they replaced. The international rules also state that they are not allowed to serve.

"The libero may function as a setter only under certain restrictions. If she/he makes an overhand set, she/he must be standing behind (and not stepping on) the 3-meter line; otherwise, the ball cannot be attacked above the net in front of the 3-meter line. An underhand pass is allowed from any part of the court."

    I hope this helps. =)

EDIT: 'S V' copied my answer from another thread :) So, I tried to change it up a bit.

  2. That person is called a libro, or a libero. They dive to the ball, and it is their job to be the defensive player and get the ball to the setter.

  3. i got this off another thread

It's the libero. they are like a defensive specialist. Their job is to only play the back row.

    It is a position.

    Here is information from wikipedia.

    "The Libero

In 1998 the libero player was introduced internationally, the term meaning free in Italian is pronounced LEE-beh-ro (rather than lih-BEAR-oh); the NCAA introduced the libero in 2002.[15] The libero is a player specialized in defensive skills: the libero must wear a contrasting jersey color from his or her teammates and cannot block or attack the ball when it is entirely above net height. When the ball is not in play, the libero can replace any back-row player, without prior notice to the officials. This replacement does not count against the substitution limit each team is allowed per set, although the libero may be replaced only by the player whom they replaced. The libero may function as a setter only under certain restrictions. If she/he makes an overhand set, she/he must be standing behind (and not stepping on) the 3-meter line; otherwise, the ball cannot be attacked above the net in front of the 3-meter line. An underhand pass is allowed from any part of the court.

The libero is, generally, the most skilled defensive player on the team. There is also a libero tracking sheet, where the referees or officiating team must keep track of who the libero subs in and out for. There may only be one libero per set (game), although there may be a different libero in the beginning of any new set (game).

Furthermore, a libero is not allowed to serve, according to international rules, with the exception of the NCAA women's volleyball games, where a 2004 rule change allows the libero to serve, but only in a specific rotation. That is, the libero can only serve for one person, not for all of the people for whom she goes in. That rule change was also applied to high school play soon after."

  4. haha most common asked question

the person with the different shirt is a "defensive specialist" or the libero usually put in for those tall middles that can't get low enough to pass the ball.

its a strategy usually these specialists can pass the ball perfectly to the setter and get any ball up.

I was one until I grew 8 inches...

now i am an outside, middle, and right side hitter!

  5. The one wearing the different coloured shirt than the other 5 is the "Libero" or the defensive specialist. He isn't allowed to serve or to "dunk" and he only passes the ball and blocks it.He must have good passing and blocking skills.

  6. They are actually the Defensive Specialist, or "Libero"

If you notice, they will NEVER attack or play in the front.  That is because they are not allowed to.

They are strictly there for defense and passing.

Oh, they also can not serve.

  7. the other one is the libero

for the defensive to the back row
