  1. They mark the worst player on the team with a different colour jersey (just like in Scarlett Letter!).  They are sooo bad at volleyball, that they are not allowed to spike or jump.  Basically the coach tells the player to stand in front of the best jump server on the other team so that he gets sacrificed and gets hit in the chest with the ball.  If he's lucky, the ball will bounce up and another player (who is better and allowed to actually set the ball) can make a play.  He also prevents the best hitter on the team (usually the middle) from getting hurt by the jump serve because the coach can substitute them in and out at any time.

Oh yah..and they're usually waay shorter than everyone else.  Remember, he shouldn't have made the team but they need SOMEONE to sacrifice themselves in front of the jump serve right?

  2. The person wearing the different colored jersey is the captin and usally is the best defender for the team

  3. They do not have to rotate with the team. They are called the libero. Basically a defensive player used to dig out the ball, rather than a tall person at the net who spikes. Here is a link for you

  4. I think it's because they are the captain of the team.

Or, maybe they are the main attackers. But I'm sure it's the first thing I listed.

  5. i'm not really sure...maybe that one person is the captain of the team

  6. That's the libero, the shorter guy who only sets the ball for spiking, The liberos don't spike, just pure defence.
