  1. Government officials get elected.  Therefore they pander to those who have the most votes.  There are more votes in cities, towns, and other non-agricultural areas.  They realize that food is important, but when they start to talk about helping farmers, ensuring continuation of agriculture, or other issues that affect rural areas, they alienate more votes than they address.  It is a matter of self preservation.

  2. Your supposition is wrong.Govrnment is doing its best, but the benefits are swallowed by middle men and low level politicians.Once india was importing food grains and other agricultural products.Today we are exporting.

There is a lot to educate the poor farmers who are still following old crop patterns.Government can't do some drastic things for political reasons. All parties are same in this regard includung our comunist friends.

Another trend of the farmers is to depend on the government for every thing. The rich farmers also get these benefits and so create political dramas in favour of poor farmers. Many of our ministers are also culprits in this regard.Imagine Amitabh

wanting to be trated as a farmer.Do you know many of the idustrialists have huge land holdings on different names.Speculation on land is wide and as the population increases pressure on land also will increase.

other problems are inter linking of rivers, irrigation canals, river water disputes, shortage of electric power.

At presnt all governments are only trying to distribute the available resourses to various sectors like industry, agriculture, science and technology. No one sector can be neglected considering the enemies around us.Ther will be some hard ships for all. That is why educated people migrate to other countries. No politician talks about them because they are not vote banks.

There is more to write but ......

  3. The question of so called self-esteem and self-image comes primarily, I suppose. If given a choice between choosing to take such steps that result in India being an agriculturally advanced nation, or that result in India having the world's third best technical institutes in the world (IITs), I'm pretty sure anybody would choose the second! ;)

  4. do you think gov't actually works for the common good?  gov't is looking at the best way to preserve it's self and those that work in it.  if they actually sovled problems then what in the world would they have to do?????

kinda like global warming and scientists, without a scare some of them would be looking for other work..

  5. No government can ignore agriculture, which is of major economic importance. Not only do they have dedicated ministries or departments, but also various government funded universities and research institutions.

It is possible that the results may not reach the farmer quickly enough.

Government is after all elected representatives sent by the citizens to govern. The council of ministers are not a repository of any knowledge. There are systems in position, which operate.

You are right in the sense that a non-performing government can slow things down.
