  1. your BMR is determined largely my the amount of muscle mass you carry.  muscle is very calorie hungry, as we age we lose muscle mass therefore require less calories.

  2. Many reasons. Mainly hormonal changes. Thyroxine, Testosterone, Growth hormone, IGF-1, and Cortisol. Declining levels of these hormones as we age contribute to the lowered metabolic rate. Hormones are also responsible for loss of muscle mass. Muscle mass in turn has a massive effect on metabolic rate.

  3. As we get older our metabolism rate drops because we are no longer developing our bodies. ie. bones Unfortunately most of us are not as active as we were when we were younger therefore we need to move more and eat less.

    It's a never ending circle.

  4. As we are not growing anymore, there is no need for more energy to grow. Less energy/food in, less energy out.

  5. that's a great question, I only wish I knew the answer.

  6. 1. Reduction in calorie intake

    2. Reduction in physical exercise

    3. Reduction in muscle mass (partial link)

All contribute to the reduction in your metabolic rate.
