  1. It really is just a bird thing. You see the bird doesn't really know that he/she is in the food bowl; the bird just thinks its in an area with lots of food around, and its probably easier access to the food for the bird being up close to it rather than leaning in from the side of the bowl.

p.s. my birds do it too.

  2. it could be because your bird wants food my parrot usually deos that to see through the door to see where we are or sometimes i have no idea why she is doing it.

  3. I have a macaw that does it so its not just with smaller birds most birds do it one reason is you don't have a perch close enough to his food bowl or that's hes just more comfortable that way its not hurting him so don't worry

  4. My parakeets and finches do this all the time.  It's perfectly normal so don't be too concerened about it.  I think sometimes they feel safe laying in the bowl.  I was trying to find some answers on the internet or links to go to with an answer but I couldn't find anything specifically on this issue.  I had a female that used to sit in the bowl and kick seeds out.  Could also be nesting behavior if it's a female but you said it's a male.  Anyway, have fun with your new parakeet.  They are so much fun!  I subscribe to BirdTalk magazine to get alot of information on my birds.  Check it out.  You can buy the magazine at your local pet shop.  Good luck!

  5. You just have to observe him/her. Many baby birds do that too. If it's accompanied by signs of illness, if the bird is sitting on the bottom of the cage, change in depositions or things like that then u shoud have him checked by a vet. Good luck

  6. i have a budgie, and he does that also. maybe it confortable for him and maybe he just cant reach his food?
