we have a rhode island red rooster who hangs his wing down and "dances" around our red star hens. why does he do this? Is he just trying to show off or something? He does it to people too when you walk by the cage, and sometimes if he's out on the lawn he will start "dancing" and then he will chase you and try to peck you/attack you!!! why does he "dance" like that???

  1. Could be he is doing a mating dance or is showing he is dominant. I'd have to see it to be sure.

  2. He is "showing his stuff!" It's typical male bird behavior. Watch the aggressive behavior toward humans though. I had to put my rooster down for that and I raised him from an egg, handled him, handfed him, and loved him like a puppy. There was nothing we could do to change the behavior--he went after kids, dogs, and anything that wasn't me. I hope you let your chickens out to free range during the day--they love nothing more.

  3. Roos are aggressive when  they strut  in a half circle with one wing extended down this is an aggressive approach signifying to hens his dominance, thus the hens will either acknowledge his move ments and either move or some have even tried to fight the roo.If the dominance has not been established the roo will do again to prove he is the boss no matter where he is in the yard or out. This will happen if you remove from yard/pen for 24 hours or more he must prove he's the boss still.

Some that are real aggressive will drop both wings and puff up feather to look bigger to hens and other roos. Its all for Dominance!!!

  4. he wants to do it u know

  5. when he does it around your hens it seems like he is trying to impress them and when people get too close he doesn't like it so it seems like a typical male, he's trying to be the "tough guy" and the "pretty boy"...

heh heh that's what I think...

  6. That is his way of showing that he is the **** of the walk.
