Because there are uniformed people who think everyone in prison is a terrible criminal. Usually, it's just someone who got caught with some weed or some other minor, non violent crime. People imagine it's all killers and rapists, but it's not even close to that. I know, from first hand experience, that most people are in there for petty BS.

Its wrong and its terrible. But, these people make decisions to put themselves in the path of these types of people. Prison is like h**l. Its not punishment, its organizing people in a manner to keep everyone happy as possible. People will be judged for their choices in the end.

people think its a laughing matter because people got themselves in prison and are now whining about  mistreatment. people think they got a dose of their own medicine. to me that still doesn't make it right. its bad enough they are behind bars, sharing a room with somebody else who probably doesn't respect them, they can never eat what the y want to eat again, they are told to go to sleep and wake up, only have about 4 hours of free time and then its back to the cell. i mean jail is already a pathetic place to live. but again, people choose to go to jail. but i think they should separate the categories of people, like if people downloaded to much stuff or if they failed to pay their parking tickets, i think they should be in an entirely different area then from the killers, drug owners, rapists, child abductors, etc

Because they see those people as criminals and don't stop to think that they are people too with feelings. They have moms and dads and wifes and husbands and kids too who are hurting. People look at the crimes they committed and define that person by it, so they think they deserve it. They are quick to look at the wrongs others have done and feel free to condemn them for it even though they no nothing about that person or their life and how they feel.

If our society didn't tolerate prison rape, then they'd allow conjugal visits.  

Could you imagine the uproar from those who think we're already coddling criminals?
