  3. If you pass electricity through a solution of copper (II) sulfate you are electrolyzing the water and producing oxygen gas, as well as some hydrogen.  The copper (II) sulfate, in the electrolysis of water, is an electrolyte.

    That said, there will also be reduction of copper at the cathode, the end connected to the negative pole of the battery, since copper is more easily reduced than hydrogen.
