Why does people have to buy sewer back-up (water damage) to protect their habitational (home) insurance?

  1. You are not required to purchase a coverage you do not feel you need. However if water backs up into your home you would not be covered for your property being damaged. This is typically inexpensive to add to your insurance and be nice to have if this happens.

    It may not happen often, but when it does it is good to have.

    I personally had my septic back up into my home and I was happy to have this covered.


  2. Its not a coverage that's included in a basic policy, it's an optional coverage that can be purchased separately.  Not all houses are at risk for this type of damage, so rather than automatically include it in the policy and make people pay for something they may not need, insurers make it an optional coverage.
