Why does pressure affect whether we have good or bad weather?

Being a typical englishman I always keep an eye on the weather forecast, and I know that high pressure generally means good weather and low pressure is rubbish weather. But why is this so?

  1. I think it is the temperature  which causes air to move and result  in  high  pressure  which is velocity pressure. The air movement causes a rarefied volume  in  adjoining  areas which  result in  low pressure. So air will rush in from other areas to neutralise the differential.causing high wind velocities  and  rain clouds where there is low pressure.

    (I may be wrong !)

  2. When there is high pressure, the general mass of air is descending, so condensation doesn't occur.

In low pressure, there is rising air == clouds ==precipitation.

  3. At high pressure, moisture doesn't condensate into clouds as easily. At low pressure, moisture tends to turn into clouds and fall as rain more easily. Air from high pressure areas flows into the low pressure areas (to balance the pressure) and brings even more moisture with it. Warm and moist air in the low pressure zone rises up and can build up into some very impressive thunder clouds.
