Why does "The Sun" have a nude woman on page 3?

I just don't see the point it's a newspaper (or tabliod) I want to read the news not see some whores fat sacks. Do these editors understand it's a newspaper not a p**n mag?

i think it was originally intended to put a smile on the man's face when he opened his paper over breakfast in the morning (because of course women dont read the sun do they!)  they could not put it on the first page because of obscenity laws, so it went on the next page, hence page three and launched the carears of sam fox, melinda messenger, linda lusardi, jordan etc etc.

I dont find it offensive at all, they are usually preety girls.

Its been going on for years now and it still does attract reader for that simple matter - when it first started it was before the Internet being so wide for p**n but it still has a market that is why they still do it - also now it is more of a platform for models/celebs to make a name for themselves and getting widespread publicity

I don't see the point of it either. Here (canada) the sun has a "sunshine girl" which is just some w***e in a skimpy bikini and a little blurb like "this hot brunette named shannon wants to be a rocket scientist" when really it should say something like "this bimbo thinks 50$ is pretty good money for showing her *** to the entire city!"  She's not in the front section of our paper though, she's in the back with the sports hmmm I wonder why.

Because it's the Sun.  People don't buy it for the topical debates and factual news items.

I wouldn't call it a newspaper, it's more of a 'lad's mag' and a terrible one at that!!

I agree with you,The Sun has no right to put a picture of a nude woman on page 3. We all know pictures of nude women belong on page 2 & 3.

I think the simple answer is "because they can."

Seeing the Page 3 woman is a "bright" in newspaper parlance.  Something to make readers smile.  

U.S. newspapers are very tame and straight-laced due to the conservative nature of the American public.   Just look at the marked difference in television commercials in Europe and in the USA!  

s*x sells, but not in America.

I was very surprised 40 years ago when I saw a Danish magazine advertisement for an underarm deoderant that displayed a perfect breast with a very long and erect nipple.  I don't think U.S. companies are ready to do that yet.

I have seen nothing pornographic on Page 3 of the Sun and doubt the tabloid would publish anything pornographic.  And I also see no reason to describe these young women as "whores" because they sign model releases for their images.
