Why does sand get hotter than soil?

  1. IT is beacuse soil is rich and moist wheras sand is not.


  2. Sand has more surface area per mass and ths will absorb heat (and cool) more quickly.

  3. I suspect it  is because sand is small pieces of rock and rock will absorb and retain heat much better than soil.

  4. it's all to do with how much energy sand and soil takes to heat up. also known as specific heat capacity (i'll refer to it as SHC). the SHC of soil is 0.80 joules/gram x degrees C (that means that it takes 8/10ths of a joule to heat one gram of soil by 1 degree Celcius. whereas the SHC of sand is 0.66 joules/gram x degrees Celcius (which means that it takes 0.66 joules of heat (energy) to heat one gram of sand by 1 degree celcius

  5. sand is made up of tiny stones , soil is mostly decayed vegetation

  6. Lower specific heat.
