  2. well, after you name it some girl's name, shouldnt you be calling it a she?

  3. It is easy to see a parallel between the sheltering nature of a ship and that of the womb.

  4. In English, it became common to call ships "she" even when they are named for males.  A long time ago, ships had goddesses, or some other beautiful female,  carved into the bows.

In the Russian navy, the ship is always called "he."

  5. Because ships are beautiful, dangerous, and can kill you.

But you still fall in love with them.

  6. Does ship is called "SHE" because it is tradition.  It has been that way for hundreds of years in the Western culture.

  7. History. Up until quite recently, all sailors were male. A ship is female because you can't always tell her what to do and she gives you so much pleasure.

    1. Admiral Nimitz once said, "Because she costs a lot in paint and powder to be eye pleasing and ready to go out."

    2. "Like a woman, she flaunts her topsides, hides her bottom, and there is always a bustle of men around her."

    # There is always a great deal of bustle around her

    # there is usually a gang of men about

    # She has a waist and stays

    # It takes a lot of paint to keep her good looking

    # She shows her topsides and hides her bottom

    # She can be all decked out

    # It takes an experienced man to handle her correctly

    # And without a man at the helm, she is absolutely un- controllable.

    # It takes a lot of Paint to keep her Good - Looking.

    # And the main reason....It's not the initial expense that breaks you, It's the upkeep!!!

    # When coming into port, always heads for the buoys.

  8. Well sometimes out at sea the crew gets kind of lonely so need I say more

  9. Ships are called she because every sailor would have trouble saying . . ."He is beautiful".  =)   I think it goes way back in history when all sailors were men and they really loved their boats, so they therefor referred to them in the female gender.
