    1. keratin protects underlying tissues from microbes, abrasion, heat, & chemical & the tightly interlocked keratinocytes resist invasion by microbes

    2. lipid protect the body from dehydration, & they also r****d entry of water across the skin surface when we take a shower or go swimming

    3. oily sebum protects skin & hairs from drying out & contains bacterial chemical that kill surface bacteria

    4. the acidic pH of perspiration retards the growth of some microbes

    5. the pigmen melanin provides some protection against the damaging effects of UV light

    6. Epidermal Langerhans cells alert the immune system to the presence of potentially harmful microbial invaders by recognizing & processing them, and macrophages in the dermis phagocytize bacteria & viruses that manage to penetrate the skin surface
