  1. The friction of the wheels passing over the steel rails....why does anything make a sound? It just does.

  2. You don't get out much, do you?  Railroads are machinery, and machinery makes noise.  Metal on metal.  It's obvious.

  3. metal on matel

  4. Trains are huge peices of machinery, when you consider the amount of tonnage passing over tracks, they are really quiet.

But nothing is completely silent, there is noise from the diesel engines, steel wheels are not very noisy but the flanges rubbing agains the inside of the rail can grind and squeel. If there is a gap at a rail joint or flat spots on wheels there will be a pronounced banging from that.

  5. There is a small gap between adjacent rail tracks. This gap is kept to accommodate expansion of tracks in the summer due to heat. When the wheels of the train go over this gap, the sound arises.
