  2. I'd hazard a guess that platform 1 was originally the up bay which is now unnumbered. Platform 2 may then have been the up platform, which is now platform 1. Taking the bay platform out of use meant that the up platform could be renumbered to number 1, which is a common number for London-bound platforms around the country.
