  1. bacteria thats why!  It goes off just like everything else.


  2. because it has dirt and microorgnisms in the oxygen is released  and then it starts to smell because of the dead micro organisms.

If water in a pond isn't moving, it's easier for algae and amoeba and other simple aquatic creatures to grow.  They release some hydrogen sulfide during their growth, but most of the smell is from decomposition of their dead remains.  Moving water makes it harder for more complex structures to form and grow, and also keeps more oxygen in the water than is comfortable for them.

  5. It stinks because the bacteria are feasting on whatever is in the water and releasing toxins, that smell.
