Why does stone cold steve austin say 3:16?

During the King of the Ring 1996 PPV, Austin got his lip busted in his first match against Wildman Marc Mero..he had to leave to a hospital to get his lip stitched up, and came back since he still had to go against Jake "The Snake" Roberts in the tournament final.

While he was at the hospital, Jake cut a promo about the bible and psalms..and Jake read a piece from John 3:16.

When Austin came back to the arena, he heard about the promo Jake cut, so he started thinking of what to say when he was coronated as King of the Ring..obviously to get himself over.

So during the coronation he said to Jake, while he was being helped to the back by referees "You sit there and you thump your bible, and you say your prayers, and it didn't get you anywhere. Talk about your psalms, talk about John 3:16..Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your @$$!"

Basically, he was saying that's what his psalm says...it was just something he wanted to say in the promo, and he said something like that since he was trying to be a heel..but it just caught on...with Austin 3:16 signs popping up at arenas...
