Why does stuff turn black when it burns?

  1. Not everything burns and leaves black material.  Pure carbon and other fuels burn completely and leave nothing behind.  Some things leave white ash behind (example would be metal oxides like Al).  Wood and paper usually leave black ash because to do not burn completely.  hope this helps


  2. when stuff burns, it carbonizes. the other substances evaporate when the are burned, leaving behind the straight carbon, which is black.
