I keep hearing the term "hard start", but these hard starts require hours of labor & 4 lbs. of Freon everytime this thing breaks equaling hundreds of dollars in repairs. Am I being ripped off or is this just an unavoidable design flaw that customers have to deal with?

  1. hard start should be used one time to bump off the compressor as far as refridgerant your evap coil is most likely leaking so i dont know what you mean by little piece of copper

  2. Sounds like the repairman is just trying to cover his tracks.

A hard start is the term for a compressor that doesn't easily start and sometimes requires a high MFD start capacitor with a potential relay. All electrical and unrelated to refrigerant. You've been getting the run around, but it appears that you are aware of it.Good luck.
