Why does the ABS light and my break light on my 1999 Pontiac Sunfire turn on?

It  is probably the brake fluid that is low if not maybe the abs sensor is out causing the abs light to come on. The break light can also be on because your pads are running low.

could be many problems or as simple as low brake fluid that means your brakes are low...or a wire if off or a comp malfunction  but check the basic  fluid level... Good Luck...

There could be a short in the wiring in the steering column. I read somewhere online about another 99 Sunfire owner having the same problem with their ABS and brake lights staying lit on their dash, and after they had the wiring fixed, the ABS light and brake lights worked fine.

Your brake fluid is probably low.  This could be due to many reasons.
