Question:

Why does the Breeder's Cup not have a turf race that is solely for colts and stallions?

Like they do the filly and mare turf. I realize that they do have a turf race that's open to colts and fillies.

  1. Races tend to be open to either fillies and/or mares only or open to all.

I've known a few colts and geldings only Maiden races but to my knowledge no pattern race (Graded, Group, Listed, whatever you want to call them) are restricted to colts and geldings.  Even the Derby (and by this I mean the Epsom Derby) is open to colts and fillies - geldings may not run.

The simple answer to your question is that fillies and mares are considered to be slightly inferior to colts and geldings and therefore are given weight allowances and more opportunities to only run against their own s*x.

  2. To the best of my knowledge, there are no "boy horse" only races.  Any race not restricted to fillies and mares can be entered by fillies or colts (or mares or horses).

Let's then get your nomenclature straightened out.  Stallions have retired to stud.  They don't race.  When a colt turns 5, he is a horse (unless he is gelded, then he's always a gelding).

Lastly, the Breeders' Cup has several turf races for colts, horses, geldings, fillies, mares (essentially any BC eligible horse over 3 can enter):

    BC Mile

    BC Turf

    BC Turf Sprint

So why would you need a male horse only race?  The female horses generally race in the filly/mare restricted races, because the purse is just as much, with an easier field, so the Saturday turf contests are effectively for male horses only.

Even Ouija Board, who had beaten great colts in her career, ran in the F/M Turf, cause it was a MUCH softer field than the Turf, with still a large purse (but I don't think it is/was as much).  And she certainly would have been competitive in the BC Turf.  But you don't see mares as good as Ouija Board too often.  Before her there was Makybe Diva, and no filly/mare anywhere near as good as either of them since.

  3. They have the Breeders Cup Turf.  It's 1 1/2 miles on the turf.  It's run right before the Classic.  English Channel won it last year.

All colts races are open to any horse who's interested in running.  All fillies races are restricted to just fillies.  That's how it is in every stakes.  Most mares stick with the mares, but the Turf has a bigger purse so if the mare is good enough, they deserve their chance.  No race is restricted to only colts, nor should it be.
