  1. Guatemala first gained it's Independence in 1821 together with El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras. Together they formed a nation called the United Provinces of Central America (later called the Federal Republic of Central America).

The flag of this nation was a horizontal blue-white-blue tricolor based on the flag of Argentina. The Republic dissolved through civil war around 1840 which began when Honduras seceeded in 1838.

In 1842-1844, an attempt was made to rebuild the nation (Confederation of Central America), but Guatemala pulled out early. Another attempt was made in 1852 (Federation of Central America), which Guatemala did not take part in. In the 1880s a Guatemalan president attempted to rebuild the nation through force of arms, but failed and died in the process. Another attempt created the Greater Republic of Central America from 1896-1898, but Guatemala was not part of this. The last attempt (a second Federation of Central America) did include Guatemala and lasted from 1921-1922. All of these failed unions used some version of the blue-white-blue tricolor of the original nation.

The current flags of all five former members are based on the former flag of the United Provinces, with Honduras' flag being the most similar and Costa Rica's being the least (since they shortened the blue stripes and added a red center stripe). Guatemala's flag is the only one that turned the stripes vertical.

It has been said of some of these flags that the two outer blue stripes are supposed to symbolize the atlantic and pacific oceans that have always surrounded the central american nations, but I don't know if that applies to all the flags based on the former UPCA.
