Why does the Mayan calender end12-21-2012?

It's a lunar calendar based on a 30 day month which gives you a 360 day year, and that just happens to be the date when you run out of days.

1. Why will that date, be the maximum point of sunspots and solar flares from the sun ?

2.  Why is that an election year ?

3.  Why does the Equinox come full circle, at the winter solstice in mid-December ?

4.  Why will there be a planetary alignment, not seen in 25,000 years arrive near that date ?

The calender ends because they didn't feel like carving into the rock anymore. Where in the world is there a non computerized calendar that goes to 2600? No where. Why? Because it is a waste of time.

I think they probably just couldn't think further into the future than that.  Seemed pretty far away when they wrote it.

On January 1, 2013 I will be in the same place I am almost every other January 1.  Hung over and tired from a night of partying.  Not blown up from armageddon.

the mayan calendar ends on this day, particularly, because that's when they believed would be the end of their time.

Considering that the Mayan calendar was made hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago, they probably considered it more than sufficient to go up to this date.

I'm not an authority on Mayan astronomy, but my guess is that this end date has something to do with their base-20 counting system, and their lunar observations.  (Maybe from the origin of their calendar, 12/21/12 has something to do with 20^20th power days?  

Rather than have their calendar end, it's probably likely that whatever cycle they discovered may just start over.

the Mayan people believed that on that date the world would come to an end ! our souls will meet with all the rest that have passed on this planet.   we will all be in a better place in time.
