Why does the NHS take so LONG for psychiatric care?

I'm at my wit's end with my delusions and depression I'm sweating and worrying from the moment I wake up till I go to sleep. But because I'm not going to kill myself they've put me on anti-depressants and put me on a WAITING LIST which will take MONTHS for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

I swear it's getting near the stage where I'm going to pack my bags and get the bus to the Glasgow Royal Gartnavel Psychiatric Hospital and REFUSE TO MOVE until they admit me.

  1. Have you tried taking medication whilst on the waiting list? Anti-depressent? SSRI...I am in the UK so am fully aware of the NHS drama, and the frustration that goes with it.

If you want to be naughty, tell them you want to harm yourself, and the law states they MUST help you. Its very naughty though.

  2. Because UK is poor country now and it going down.

  3. Yep, it truly is terrible.  My parents wanted my sister admitted for an eating disorder - she was on various waiting lists for years (drug rehab, and cognitive behaviour therapy).

In the end my parents had to buy the drugs for her and slowly wean her off them, because the doctor wouldn't even prescribe anything.  And then she was admitted to hospital because she was almost dead from the eating disorder.  Even then my parents wanted her transferred to the local specialist clinic, but the doctor kept telling her it was full which was an outright lie.  My mum had to keep calling the place in question to check it had a bed available (which it always did) and then tell the doctor, and eventually when my mum threatened to contact the MP and the papers, they transferred her to the special clinic.

The only way you will get treatment is if you really reach the end, or if you threaten to take the matter further.

I wish you luck and I hope you get the help you need soon.

  4. Because they're short of funds, short of staff and short of facilities and resources.

Blame the government and those high up people who manage it badly. It could be worse; you could be in the US with no insurance...

  5. Because we have a desperate shortage of psychiatrists in this country.

If things are becoming unbearable you might have to exaggerate your symptoms in order to get swifter treatment. But whatever you do do not attempt a fake suicide as a cry for help. This will get you sectioned and you do not want that on your record.

  6. Because you are not the only one who has problems and you have to wait your turn thats why.
