Question:

Why does the Optical drive (where a CD would go) keep popping out every now and then when i'm using my laptop?

I just bought a new Toshiba laptop and every now and then when I'm using it the optical drive pops out.. why is this? I know i'm not accidentally bumping into the button or anything. Can anyone help?

  1. If the button is not being pressed it could be that the drive is bad or some type of software is making the disk eject. For example if you are not using the drive (or software that would access the drive) and it just starts to open it would most likely be a faulty drive. Another test is to run the computer outside of Windows (maybe in the BIOS) to see if the drive still opens. If the drive opens like this outside of Windows it is a defective drive.

    If it turns out it only happens when using a certain program then this would point to a possible software problem. The best way to troubleshoot this is to determine what is happening when the drive opens. If you can pinpoint when it happens it would be much easier to explain if you need to contact support.

    Since this is a new computer I recommend going through their support options and having the drive replaced. One other option is visiting their support site to see if there are any updates for the drive or help documents.
