  2. The Tennessee river and the Nile river are not the only rivers to run in a northerly direction. All rivers flow in the direction of the slope of the land. The land slopes in all directions so a river in that area will flow in what ever direction the land does. Rivers must flow downhill but downhill doesn't mean the direction south. If you were on a mountain and hiked down the north slope, you would be heading north but going down hill. Other rivers flowing north are Rhine, Yenisei, Nelson, Mackenzie, Red River, California's San Joaquin River  and Lena to name a few.

The Ohio river flows mostly west, as it meanders back and forth. The Murray/Darling in Australia flows primarily west as does the Congo, Orange and Senegal in Africa.

Check out the Snake River. It flows a bit south west, then turns and flows directly north for a while before it bends and flows west joining the Columbia that flows west into the Pacific.

Flowing east there is Limpopo in Africa and the mighty Amazon in Brazil. What about the St. Lawrence? It flows east as well.

Some do flow south. Niger and Volta in Africa, Mississippi in the States etc

  3. Lots of rivers run north:

    Mackenzie (Canada)

    Ob (Russia)

    Elbe (Central Europe)

    Vistula (Poland)

    Orinoco (Venezuela)

    Cuyahoga (Ohio)

Those are just the ones I could think of

Most that do so are in cold, remote areas or are small and not well known

  4. Thats Simple! Rivers are streams that flow across the surface of the land, usually to the sea.. They flow down stream. it has nothing to do with north or south, east & west.. since they start up in a mountain as snow, as it mealts they follow small creeks and streams down ward. in other words it goes from high elevation into low elevation.. it all has to do by where the high geographical region is and where the low regions such as sea leves are. sometimes itll start in mountains in the south..
