Guantanamo Bay was acquired by USA in a treaty in 1903 on a lease(like most land leases like Hong Kong) for 99 years when USA and Cuba had diplomatically relations.

The lease expired in 2002 so yes it is now illegal but who can get rid of the Americans? They pay the fee ever year but I don't think Castro accepts it.

Yes, we are at odds with Cuba.  However, US possession of Guantanamo Bay was obtained through a treaty in 1903, long before the establishment of the Castro regime. The current Cuban government considers the US base there to be illegal.

I'm sure that the Bush administration will claim otherwise, but the camp was presumably placed there to make it as difficult as possible for anyone to inspect it or otherwise keep close tabs on what goes on there.

Good question.  It's part of a military base we have there, excuse me, a military base in CUBA?  Yes, god knows how that came to be or why it goes on - pretty schizophrenic if you ask me.  And even if you don't.

Guantanemo Bay (Gitmo)  is the prison.  It's where the .U. S. has interned suspected terrorists from the "War on Terror."
