The air around my washing machine smells, not so much the water or my clothing. But the "air" around it stinks. It is located in my basement, and it seems to be hooked up properly.

  1. Are you sure it's the washer?  When I hear 'rotten egg smell' I think Sulphur, which makes me think natural gas leak.  You may want to call the gas man if there is a gas pipe or hot water heater near your washer.

  2. The washing machine has a filter in the agitator that needs to be cleaned periodically.

  3. Wayfarout is right about the gas smell. You may also be smelling sewage if your drain line from the washer is connected to the main (4 In) sewar line close to the washer. Depends on where you are located some Washer lines can drain into a nearby ditch without being connected to the sewar.

  4. Try lemon juice.

  5. Check the trap on the sink. It may be improperly installed or you may not have one at all. The trap prevents sewer gas from escaping into your house. If you do have a properly installed trap, try pouring some straight bleach down the drain and let it sit in the trap overnight. I had the same problem in my bathroom sink and it worked great. Good luck!
