Why does the batter seem larger than the pitcher from the center field camera?

When looking from the center field television camera position towards home plate, it would seem the pitcher would appear larger because he is between the center field camera and the batter, and thus closer to the camera...but it is the batter who appears larger.

  1. Well, I've never noticed that!  Strange because most pitchers are fairly tall, on average much taller than batters.

The only thing that I can think of is the focus: the batter is more in focus because it is where the camera is aiming (usually the catcher's glove).  With the mound and the pitcher off to the side, maybe that make the pitcher smaller...
