Why does the bible always say "and I say unto you"? ?

Why does it always have to announce that it is going to say something important? Why can't it just say it? That would have saved alot of time and money at the time of printing. Don't you think the monks got a little tired of the "and i say unto you"'s?

Because using , "hey", was not cool back then.

You got to admit it's more elegant then saying.. "I tell you what." or repeatedly asking "Know what I'm saying? "

Maybe the authors of the Bible got paid by the word, so they put in a little filler here and there.

Because adding things like that to Jesus's words makes him sound even more important in the eyes of some people.

It may also simply have been a personal idiosyncrasy, like people who say "lemme tell ya" whenever they speak.

Either way, there are strict Scriptural injunctions against removing a single word from the Bible, so I doubt the monks would have said anything even if "and I say unto you" got on their nerves.

The monks probably did get tired of transcribing that over and over, but they weren't going to leave anything out, just because they were bored.

We Americans say stuff like that all the time.  "Let me just say this one thing," or "What I would say is," or "I'll tell you this."  Same idea.

They just carved themselves a big rubber stamp that said "and I say unto you" on it, in order to save time...

Why not take the entire passage, it's amazing how much light the Bible sheds on all these questions!

Jesus said things like, "You have heard it said that ... (something or other), BUT I SAY TO YOU, ..."  (not "AND I say to you" - at least get your out-of-context quote correct!)

Example:  In old times, it was said to love your friends and hate your enemies, but *I* say to you to LOVE your enemies ... (etc)

In old times, it was said you shall not commit adultery, but *I* say to you, that if you even LOOK at a woman with lust in your heart, you're already guilty of adultery!

In old times, it was said that you shall not commit murder, but *I* say to you that if you even so much as hate, or even show anger to another person, you are already guilty of murder!

In other words, Jesus was saying that in the Old Testament you got off easy.  Your actions counted against you.  But in the New Testament, even your thoughts, your attitudes and your motives count against you.

I think because at the time the Bible was written this was how they spoke to each other?? But then again it could have been the way it was translated.  I never really thought about it. I know you can get many translations now that cut a lot out and just have the basic. Such as The Living Translation.
