Why does the copper wire not disappear during copper and silver nitrate redox reaction?

  1. silver nitrate melts at around 400F, where as copper melts at 2500F


  2. There is just not enough silver nitrate or not enough time allowed for the reaction.  As the equation indicates, the copper metal does dissolve, so if an excess of silver nitrate was allowed to react completely with the wire, it would disappear.  Copper is cheaper than silver though, so usually the copper is supplied in excess...

    Cu + 2Ag+ ----> Cu2+ + 2Ag
